I am delighted to be the first stop in Clara Bowman-Jahn and Susan April Elwood’s blog tour for their newly released book. The question I asked is one very close to my heart, as my blog followers will recognize, and, I am sure, empathize with.

Hi Friends!

This our first post in our blog tour for our new book, EDMUND PICKLE CHIN, A DONKEY RESCUE STORY. Hello! We are so glad you are joining us. We are starting with a most serious topic. We hope you will stay with us for the tour because it gets more fun as the tour goes on. You’ll also be able to win prizes so stay tuned and we’ll tell you how.

Today’s topic may be a little more serious than usual perhaps, but we thank Joanna for the opportunity to bring it out in the open. She asks how we hope the book will spread the word of mistreatment of animals.

It’s is a shame that there is such a thing as animal and child abuse…BUT it is a reality.

Joanna asked what we hoped to accomplish as far as, raising awareness of mistreated animals and in terms of kids learning how to treat animals with respect and kindness. These two things more less go hand in hand for Edmund Pickle, A Donkey Rescue Story. For it is through the book itself that we hope children will see our main character Susan, who is portrayed as a child herself, takes on the care of this mistreated donkey. Hopefully it will show children that it is not only adults that can make a difference. With luck they will take the message to heart and take better care for their own pets at home

By going into the classroom and sharing Edmund’s story Clara and I hope to impress upon young children that all creatures deserve respect and compassion. What a better way to teach children about a situation as serious as this, then through a delightfully illustrated picture book. We are fortunate to be able to go into classrooms and spread the word! Being we are long distance co-authors we will reach even more children, with Clara in Virginia and me in Georgia.

Even after we have left the classroom we hope the teacher’s will reinforce our message by use of hand outs, coloring pictures or a pledge for the children to sign, stating they will never mistreat animals and be an ambassador for animals as Edmund is on the farm! This would include them telling an adult if they see any critter being mistreated, always making sure their own pets are cared for by not only having food but fresh water, and exercise and never chaining their dog or leaving a pet without shelter.

Ironically Michael Vick was born and raised in Virginia, Clara’s state, and played for the Atlanta Falcons here in Georgia near me. With people in the public eye/ role models committing horrible acts against animals, it makes it even harder for us to show children that just because someone is famous or popular doesn’t make an act right and that there are consequences for those acts.

There are links to the nonprofit farm, both facebook and the website printed right on the book so that a parent or teacher can further look into the rescue/sanctuary and contact me if they so desire to help educate that abuse are not acceptable.

If we take time to teach the younger generations then maybe there is hope for this grim topic.

  1. Hooray! Launch kick-off day! I enjoyed the first post. I think children are naturally compassionate towards animals and even more so towards injured animals. I know Edmund’s story will touch their hearts — especially the lucky children who will meet you on author/illustrator visits. It is so important to share these stories with children because they like to get involved. Perhaps they will rescue an animal or pet from a shelter. Have a great tour!

    • clarbojahn says:

      Thanks, Patriciak!

I agree that most kids are compassionate towards animals naturally and have to be taught how to be mean. We hope they never learn how to be mean or to take out their frustrations on their pets or other animals.

The reality is that there are millions of unwanted dogs and cats in shelters and we hope to teach that it is compassionate to spay and nuture. Also there are abused animals in these shelters and they got there because they were mistreated or abused some how and not wanted..

We hope to raise consciousness about these situations and to teach alternative behavior to this even if it is dropping an animal off at a rescue farm.

Thanks so much for your comment. I look forward to seeing Edmund’s interview on your site. 🙂

      • Susan Elwood says:

Thank you Patricia, I couldn’t agree more. If Edmund’s story can teach one child about compassion, I feel it was a success!

  2. clarbojahn says:

Thanks so much, Joanna, for hosting us on tour and for being the brave one to start it off. I hope all your readers will enjoy the post and think about what Susan wrote. 🙂

    • Joanna says:

I am so happy to participate in this blog tour. And I am very supportive of your wonderful goals with this publication.

  3. I’m grateful that Edmund found a safe haven, both at Evermay Farm, and in your book! Your book will help kids really think about animals and about what happens to them. Even what might seem innocent things such as leaving a dog in a car for a short time may become disastrous. The more kids that are educated to speak up the better!

All the best to you in your book launch, your visits with kids, and beyond!

    • Susan Elwood says:

Yes, you are so right! Children need to be educated on care and responsibility to abuse. Edmund IS one of the lucky ones and he is able to give back through his story! If they could all be so lucky.

  4. Margot Finke says:

Clar is an old writing mate of mine, and I think this new book from her and Susan will help kids become aware of cruelty to animals. Edmund’s story puts a “face’ on the victim, and also creates a crucial awareness in the classrooms, and for the families that read it together.

I enjoyed this first post and wish both Clar and Susan every success with it.

Thank you! It’s sad his story is real but I am so proud him and all he has accomplished. It’s trough his progress we are able to tell this story.

    • Susan Elwood says:

Thank you. It is sad Edmund’s story is real but it is because of his struggle, this story was written and able to hopefully help others. I am so very proud of him and how far he has come.

  5. How wonderful that you are able to use Edmund’s story to show kids how to care for animals, to, hopefully, prevent future mistreatment of animals too. Congratulations on birthing this book, Clar and Susan!

    • Susan Elwood says:

Thank you! Edmund’s story is hopefully a tool that can be used to teach child respect for all critters.

  6. Congratulations on the book. It’s a cute story on a very valuable topic for children and adults. We’ll see you over at my place on Thursday.

    • Susan Elwood says:

Thank you. The topic is close to heart and I am thrilled to be able to share it through Edmund’s story .

  7. Great post! 🙂 I love this book! 🙂

  8. Congratulations Clar, Susan and Lynne! What a wonderful book! I agree that it is so important to help young children understand that kindness towards animals is a responsibility of anyone who interacts with them. I love that Joanne addressed the topic of animal cruelty…the more it is brought out into the open, the greater the chance we will be able to eradicate it.

  9. rhythm says:

I’m excited to learn all about Edmund. You have done a fine job in bringing this topic to kids. It’s a topic that is close to my heart and I do what I can to educate kids about animal welfare. There should definitely be more books like Edmund Pickle Chin!! Can’t wait to read it!

  10. Your book covers such an important subject. Animal abuse just breaks my heart. Congrats on the launch, Clar!

  11. Suzy Leopold says:

Edmund, you are just too cute! How exciting for you, Clara and Susan & Lynne, too, as your book makes it debut. I look forward to reading the book and learning more about Edmund.
