Opening:

It’s a perfect day for a yeti hunt.                                                                                                 A yeti hunt?                                                                                                                            Yup.

Synopsis:

The big brother in this story thinks that a snowy, blustery winter day is the perfect day for a yeti hunt. The little boy isn’t so sure and bombards his brother with questions: How will I know if I smell a yeti? Can it see in a snowy blowy blizzard? As the boys trek through the snowy landscape in their search for the illusive yeti, the author/illustrator allows child reader get to spot the yeti on nearly every page before the boys’ sighting.

When they finally meet, the boys panic, drop their camera, and race home, pursued by the yeti. When the yeti arrives at their door, they realize he was just returning their fallen camera, and thank him with some hot cocoa and of course, the inevitable selfie!

Why I like This Book:

There is a fun rhythm to the text, which is sparse and witty, with the little boys inquisitive and insightful questions receiving an affirmative “Yup” and brief explanations from his brother and the repetitive chorus of, “No yeti yet,” which trips off the tongue like ice cream down the throat. The humor of the hidden yeti merging with his surroundings will delight young children, who love to be on the inside of a joke.

There is also a charming development of the younger brother’s questions, where he  shows more insight into yeti-hunting than his older brother. This sibling dynamic is delightful and the furry creature is cute. There’s a definite nod to the classic, WE’RE GOING ON A BEAR HUNT.

The title must be a good one–it’s already stuck in my head. 🙂 Not ready for snow in real life, but picture book snow is good.

  6. Very cute Joanna. I had to admit I had to google what a Yeti is. Never heard of it before. Now I know. I love the play with words.
