Mrs P and my Prize

Spread the love

Many of you will remember that I won 4th place in the Share a Story Shape a Future competition for my Letter to Nancy of Swallows and Amazons. My writing friend, Beth, from elizabethannewrites, who won third place, kindly offered to receive and post the prize on to me (most competitions are restricted to North American addresses). I will most definitely be joining in with Share a Story Shape a Future next year as I has such fun.

Today I received my prize from Mrs P and I shall be donating it to our school library, as I can see that it would be a greatly appreciated resource there. This, and many other books, are compiled by the actress Kathy Kinney, as Mrs. P, who played Mimi on The Drew Carey Show.  This book is entitled Mrs P’s Four Favorite Fairy Tales & Funny Stories. The four well known stories in this book are “The Frog Prince”, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Sleeping Beauty”, and “The Emperor’s New Clothes” making this a classic collection of fairy tales for a child to enjoy. It contains over one hundred pages and almost as many illustrations, from various artists, some with subtle tones and print, others with vivid colors. I love the double-paged spread of an elephant pulling a brightly colored carriage of the Emperor in his “new clothes”. Mrs. P shares a humorous introduction to each story.

The very unique aspect to this book is that children can listen to Mrs P. tell each story herself, online at mrsp.com, while following along in the book, making this a fun interactive experience that can help promote the love of reading. Sitting in her rocking chair by the hearth, Mrs P makes a delightful, grandmotherly, story-teller. Younger children will feel like they are reading as they listen to the story with some adult help. Older children will be able to follow along in the book independently by reading along with Mrs.P. Having a resource such as Mrs.P is a great way to encourage reading. This collection of classic stories is for children from 6-10.

I want to underline also that 10% of the profits of this book are given to Literacy organizations. Do check out the website as there are many other story videos to be accessed for free, as well as posters, coloring sheets and activities for children.  The site also hosts story-writing competitions for children.

Thank you to Mrs P for this wonderful prize and an opportunity to discover a great new online resource, promoting a passion for reading.
